Masculinity is in flux. Across the world, men are navigating shifting expectations, economic pressures, and growing disconnection from meaningful relationships and purpose. The traditional models of masculinity—rooted in dominance, emotional suppression, and individualism—are proving unsustainable in today’s complex world.
While some men are embracing a more balanced and conscious approach, others are retreating into reactionary versions of masculinity, fuelled by frustration, alienation, and disillusionment.
The Disconnection Crisis: Why Men Are Struggling
The astounding Netflix series Adolescence, a deeply moving and deeply harrowing TV experience, offers a stark lens into this crisis, exposing the emotional struggles of young men who feel left behind. Many, feeling disconnected from meaningful relationships and healthy expressions of masculinity, gravitate toward incel communities, extreme ideologies, or self-destructive behaviours. Instead of seeking emotional depth or healthy male bonding, they double down on resentment and nihilism, reinforcing loneliness and self-imposed exile.
Christine Emba, writing for Vox, describes how many men today feel unmoored, caught between outdated ideals and a world that no longer affirms them. With fewer male role models, shrinking social networks, and increasing economic pressures, many retreat into isolation or online spaces that reinforce resentment, self-victimisation, and reactionary masculinity.
This disconnection is not just cultural—it is structural. It affects relationships, parenting, and workplace dynamics, leading many men to seek extreme solutions—reactionary politics, hyper-individualistic careerism, or digital escapism.
If masculinity remains trapped in these outdated cycles, we will continue to see broken relationships, disengaged male leaders, and a society unable to harness the full potential of men in a positive way.
The Masculinity Reckoning: Strength, Connection, and Leadership
Masculinity is at a turning point. Across cultures, industries, and social spaces, the old scripts of what it means to be a man are collapsing under scrutiny, leaving many men lost, isolated, or drawn toward reactionary versions of masculinity.
Figures like Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Mark Zuckerberg embody two dominant, yet flawed, models of masculinity, As The New York Times and The Guardian highlight:
The "Hard Masculinity" Model – Aggressive, combative, and performative, positioning power as something to be seized and wielded over others.
The "Disengaged Tech Bro" Model – Emotionally detached, status-driven, and hyper-rational, using power to shape reality through technology and influence.
Both models lack emotional depth and human connection, reinforcing control, competition, and isolation. These rigid forms of masculinity place an increasing burden on women, who are expected to fill the emotional gaps men struggle to address themselves.
This crisis reflects the growing gulf between young men and women, with many men struggling to form meaningful relationships or develop emotional resilience. Without healthy male role models or spaces for constructive self-exploration, some retreat into resentment, blame, and rigid notions of masculinity.
How Do We Navigate This Shifting Landscape?
For years, I’ve tried to avoid using the phrase "toxic masculinity"—not because masculinity itself is toxic, but because the term can be stigmatising. However, it is hard to ignore what we are witnessing today—a masculinity that has failed to illuminate its own shadow, choosing instead to externalise responsibility, project blame, and foster division rather than unity.
Masculinity is not inherently toxic—it is a construct that evolves across generations. Many traditional expressions of masculinity are deeply valuable—but when taken to the extreme, they become harmful. It is this extremism that makes masculinity toxic.
